"I don't want to be interesting. I want to be good." Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
I understand what he is trying to communicate with the public and other artists when I read this quote. No artist does his work just to impress people, they do it for their passion of art, and use it as a way to individualize themselves from others. Today, we see paintings that are very fun to look at, colorful, bright, the whole ten yards, but there is something missing. Yes, these paintings are pretty and exciting to look at, but not all artwork needs to be a 'sight for sore eyes.' There are painings and other types of artwork out there that are black and white, and some even have some historical meaning to them. These pieces are bland and sometimes dull in color, but not every piece of artwork needs to be bright and interesting to be a wonderful piece of work.
